How to choose and use essential oils

0

Finally! As long promised I wrote an article full of information to help You to use and choose essential oils.

CHOOSING

The best way to choose Your essential oil is, to smell it.

The characteristics of an essential oil are summoned in its scent.

The scent should be pleasant to You.

Scents have a direct stimulus on our brain.
If You dislike a scent, it can have a negative stimulus to Your brain and might have a negative effect on You or one that You don`t wish to have. An unpleasant scent can be a  constant unpleasant stimulus to Your brain and therefor turn out to be negative stress.

There might be some organic store or herbal store close to where You live, where You can smell the oil before You buy it.  Some shops have test bottles.

If  You don`t have the possibility to smell the essential oil before you buy it, You can choose Your essential oil by

  • its EFFECT
  • its familiar smell because You know the original plant
  • Scent descriptions from different resources
  • Preferences: WHAT DO YOU LIKE/ DISLIKE? e.g. fresh scent, bloomy/flowery scent, wooden/green/conifer scent,  earthy scent, heavy, light, sweet, lemonlike, ….
  • Buy only SMALL AMOUNTS  if You are unsure that You will  like it.

Energy Please! Essential Oils And Herbs For ADD/ ADHD: Wake Up Call and Concentration!

0

I have been promising since Halloween to write an article about Essentials Oils for Sleep Disorders…and nothing have I written yet about it.

But lately, I feel much more the contrary and  in need of  some Energy, something to wake me up!
Be it because I haven’t slept well the last nights, cuz my cat kept terrorising me for getting more food?
He has been stomach sick for one day only, but is still on some kind of diet with food. That causes him to think he is still starving and dying from hunger and screaming the whole night and scratching on everything he can find!
I finally  gave up today and gave him some cat crackers…

Or is it because of spring time fatigue?
Still beginning of February, but who knows?… Btw… I love it, that the days get longer now again! 🙂

So here is my suggestions, when You feel tired (for whatever reasons) and in the need of some Energetic Superpower!

… For all You quick and short readers: I summarized the qualities of the essential oils in a short list at the end of the article. ;-)

My first suggestion: Get some relaxing sleep!
Ok, that is kind of an easy suggestion and obvious.
And sometimes not possible. ( For me, most times not possible, too much to-do!)

Get some physical exercise. Go for a walk outside in the parc, woods, lake,… or do some Aerobic in your house or silly dancing, jumping around, whatever you feel like.
Physical exercise can increase the dopamin level and happy making endorphin level.

Make sure you are not ill and need to be treated by a physician. Well yes, that is a serious suggestion. Different illnesses , hormone imbalances ( e.g. hypothyreosis) or disorders can lead to tiredness. Most often You can use essential oils safely, together with a medical treatment.

So, you have slept enough, are physical ok. and not always but just now tired and want an

Essential Oil Energetic Boost:

If You are all over the place, can’t sleep and are extremely hyperactive, these oils may not be the best for You, but more some calming oils.
Especially Lemongrass and Rosemary can have a very energizing effect.

Lemongrass

Cymbopogon citratus
Lemongrass oil is a  scent with a high energetic level. Like a high tone in music.
Vibrant, stimulant, fresh, of a light green colour.
It is a strong essence that gives a lot of power when tired and exhausted.
So strong that it is a bit like a “shocking” wake up, like a cold shower.
Lemongrass also helps with Concentration and Focusing, esp. with paper work.

Except from the essential oil, You can use fresh or dried Lemongrass as a Herbal Tea. Also a must-have for Thai  and Vietnamese Curries!Yummie! 🙂
Lemongrass has a cooling effect and is used in some countries against fever (e.g.India, in Jamaica it is called Fever Grass).

Lemon

Citrus Limon
Lemon oil is fresh, vitalizing, and has a cheerful, uplifting energy.
Good for Concentration and Focusing on paper work, studies, writing, but also for long car rides.
A study in Japan showed, that the Essence of Lemon in a room, can reduce typos up to 54%!
I should use that more when blogging! So I dont have to recheck all time…

Lemon oil is helpful when you feel tired, but also emotional down.
It gives clarity and a more rational view  in conflicts and difficult emotional situations.
Lemon oil is also a natural antiseptic and desinfection oil.

Peppermint

Mentha x piperita

Ladybug needs some fresh breath? Mint leaves

Peppermint gives a fresh energetic kick! whenever we feel tired, stuck, burned out or emotional down.
Freshness not only for the breath but also for the mind!

Peppermint is a  cold essence, mixed with a vegetable oil, it can be applied on the head-front and temporal ( avoid eye contact!), when having headaches and migraines– from too much thinking or things going on, for example.
Also helpful when feeling nauseous or stomach sick.
Shouldn’t be used in bath salts or other bath oils= too long exposure, too much cooling off the body! Even in warm water.

Green Mint / Spearmint

Mentha spicata and Mentha spicata var. crispa “Nane”
Also interesting, when you prefer another mint scent that is not so strong and so cold as Peppermint.
Spearmint has a similar effect as Peppermint, but a bit lighter.
One of my favorite essential oils and also Herb for Tea and for food. Continue reading

Beautiful relaxing music from Bach- enjoy together with a cup of Lemonbalm tea?

3

What an amazing piece….. After having a real hard day and week, I just found this musical beauty on youtube. Together with a cup of herbal tea this music helped me a lot to come down, take some deep breaths and be remembered how beautiful living is and how unimportant sorrows and stress can be for the moment. I made  my herbal tea with: Lemonbalm, Orange and Jasemin blossoms, Fennel, Dandelion, Echinacea. Yummie! And this music is from the composer J.S. Bach, not Edward Bach from the Bach Flowers 😉 ….seems like Bach is a good name for creations… well “Bach” means a brook, a stream… bubbling ideas?

Little Cypress Tree – So Focused!

3

Yesterday on the market I bought a cute little Cypress tree. 🙂

It was standing there between flowers and vegetables and it was talking to me: “Hey you, will you take me home with you, please?”
What a beautiful tree and such a nice question. How could I say no? 😉

Btw., I am not crazy, just a little bit, and yes sometimes plants kinda talk to me. They catch my attention and then somehow persuade me to take them home with me . And I feel sorry for the plants too, seing them in little pots in the super markets and then beeing thrown away when nobody buys them. So yes, my house and balcony is full of plants!

Anyway I was just coming from a meeting with a parents school, where I will offer some workshops about Essential Oils, Bach Flowers and Herbal Medicine next year.

And I thought, what a great way to talk about the Essential Oil of Cypress and show the plant.

When you see a Cypress tree you will understand its uplifting, straight forward, focused energy!
And even the little one I got, already shows this energy.
Take a look, what do you think? 🙂

Actually I dont know what kind of Cypress tree this is. I tried to do some research today, but couldnt find it out. It is probably a Lawson’s Cypress mini-tree.

The Essential oil made from the  Cypress tree, I have been talking about in previous posts, comes from  the mediterranean Cypressus sempervirens.
But still, can you catch this energy? Of focus and clarity? Look how even this small tree here is all in shape naturally, growing straight to the sky, all leaves in place and not messed up and all around the place?! 🙂

I wanted to share this with you, after talking so much about the essential oil.
I ll keep the little tree next to my desk or on the balcony and pay it a visit and let myself get inspired, whenever I need focus and clarity! Probably I will be stuck next to this plant, cuz focus and clarity aint the most given gifts I have! LOL 🙂

Essential Oils for ADD: CLARITY for the scattered mind, calmness for anxiety

0

Uhhh I have been very busy the last weeks.
I opened a new business last year and finally wanna come out with my products to sell them.
One part of the business is creating several essential oil blends, that can help with everyday life.

So I was trying to make the perfect design for the labels of my spray bottles and of course , no one was perfect. I  tried many many different versions, fonts, and so on. It took my ages! Still not happy about design….

And of course I was also multi-tasking, cuz doing something and beiing creative and busy, my mind jumps from one idea to another.
A
nd so I was also trying to think about a blend for grounding oneself, the element Earth, some blend with Vetiver in it.
But: I just could not create the right formula and get the right idea. I read in books, tried to get an inspiration, ….

But then I started to create another Blend : Clarity!
That came to me easy, I was probably so ready for this and needed clarity, beeing stuck and confused with many ideas and not beeing happy about any of them, cuz none was perfect.

So here is my idea and essential oils for CLARITY: Continue reading

Essential oils for ADD / ADHD: Scattered, Unfocused, not getting anything done? Vetiver, Frankincense, Cypress and Rosemary

6

Are you feeling scattered and can’t focus, are you all over the place and nowhere in particular and get nothing finished or done?
Yes, I know this sounds familiar, especially for us ADDers! But the good news is, there are essential oils from plants that can help! And the other good news is: I am eventually writing my post about this topic, that I have planned for such a long time. 😉

There are many essential oils out there and many can help with ADD symptoms. In this post I like to focus on 4 essential oils, that can give structure and help us to focus, concentrate and get things done

.… For all  You quick and short readers: I summarized the qualities of the essential oils in a short list at the end of the article. 😉 …

Essential oils can increase the level of Neurotransmitters in our body.
For example: Rosemary, Cypress and Frankincense can increase the Dopamin and Noradrenalin level– these neurotransmitters are said to be on a low level when having ADD /ADHD, cuz we consume them like a tasty chocolate cake- all of it -give it to me! 😉
Dopamin makes us happy, helps us to concentrate, gives us an emotionall drive and impuls, makes us feel good and gives a feeling of Joy and Confidence. Sounds good, huh? So … more of that please! With the help of Essential Oils, for example?

VETIVER ( Vetiveria or Chrysopogon zizanioides )- Hello Earth!

Vetiver Root Author: Sengai Podhuvan

The Essential Oil from  Vetiver is often discussed, when it comes to treatment of ADD with essential oils.
Vetiver is a grass that has a deep and branched root. From this root the essential oil is made through distillation. Vetiver is planted in several regions against soil erosion,  with its huge roots it helps to ” hold together” and stabilize the land.
This
stabilizing quality can also help us ” not to fall apart” emotionally.

Vetiver has an intense “grounding quality” , it helps us to come in contact with ourselves, feel our body and our needs. It is good for people who are all over the place or driven more by their heads than their hearts.
Vetiver is associated with the Earth element,  YIN energy and astrologically with the sign Taurus and the planet Venus.

VETIVER can help rational people and it also helps,  whenever you feel tense, nervous or exhausted. It can release tension and give you Energy, Strenght and Regeneration, like the strenght of the Earth that is holding and taking care of us. It  has a warm, deep and embracing quality. It can help us to be more tolerant and calm towards ourselves, our sorrows and emotional issues and also towards our environment.

The scent of Vetiver has an intense earthy  tone, its colour is dark and the oil is very thick and sticky. Some like the smell others hate it, somedays it is nice, others not.
You only need  a small amount of the oil, the scent is so strong, about 1 drop only in 50 ml carrier oil or alcohol will be enough. You can warm the bottle with the Vetiver oil to thin it, for easier access.

From the following oils I am gonna talk about in this article, that can give you structure, this is the only YIN oil and the only one that has also an aphrodisiac, erotic aspect .
The next oils I mention are more cooler oils, that give clear structure and helps us to concentrate on and accomplish our tasks.

More about Vetiver against soil erosion, very interesting: http://vetiver.org/

and this one: click here ,  take a look at the pic with the roots, amazing!

Vitamin supplements and Fishoil?

0

On so many websites and also books, I always come across dietary supplement pills, when it comes to Alternative treatment of ADHD.
I just wanna give my 2 cents and more to this discussion. I am not saying I know everything and I am not denying anyones experiences, I just wonder…. ask, and think aloud!

Getting tested for a vitamin deficiency

Food Not Bombs flyer

Food Not Bombs flyer (Photo credit: Toban B.)

Actually I don’t like the idea of taking vitamin pills and other supplements, for no severe health problem reason. It is true that  a deficiency can have a negative effect on nerves, behaviour, concentration, the body itself. And I am not saying that vitamin supplement is a never ever!
It is possible to  test a malnutrition and a malabsorption in any laboratory as long as I can afford it. There are specific blood tests, etc. There are also tests, to check if our body is capable of absorbing the vitamins and minerals out of the food we eat and if our body is capable to metabolize what it gets.
When can afford  food and prepare a healthy meal and as long as we don’t suffer from some illness or condition, that makes our body uncapable of absorbing or metabolizing vitamins and minerals, there is most often not a problem with a vitamin defiency, i my opinion.

I wonder, why is there often an advice for supplementary vitamins and minerals when it comes to ADD?

Is there a proven connection between ADD and malnutrition?
